With Tasmania’s electricity supply almost at 100% renewable generation, the next big challenge for our state’s energy transition is in transport and industry. Replacing imported fossil fuels such as natural gas and diesel with Tasmanian generated renewable energy will increase our self sufficiency and create economic opportunities.

The decarbonisation of some transport (road freight, aviation and shipping) and industry (chemicals, cement, minerals and metal processing) sectors will be very challenging due to limited currently viable options. However, this challenge presents opportunities for world leading innovation and to create new industries.

IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Agency) is hosting a webinar tomorrow to share early insights from their upcoming report ‘Reaching Zero with Renewables’ and from IRENA’s recent advice provided to the G20 Climate Stewardship Working Group on the use of renewables in the challenging industry and transport sectors.

The webinar will be at 11pm tomorrow night AEST.
