Renewable Energy Zone

Renewable Energy Zones (REZ), coordinate new wind, solar, transmission and battery storage projects in areas of abundant renewable resources while protecting environmental, cultural and social values.

The establishment of REZs will coordinate access to existing and new transmission lines to areas with excellent renewable energy resources. REZs are expected to play a key role in minimising the cost of build out for Tasmanian customers and connecting generators through optimising the design of the power system.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has identified three candidate REZs and two Offshore Wind Zones (OWZs) in Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Government established Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania (ReCFIT) in recognition of the alignment between a rapidly transitioning energy sector and the impacts and opportunities of a changing climate.

ReCFIT are responsible for establishing REZs in Tasmania and in December 2022, they announced the North West will be to be the first region to be explored for the development of a REZ.
