Biological Farming Skills Mentorship
Program Overview
The Biological Farming Skills Mentorship has been designed to help fast-track farmers’ knowledge and skills in biologically based production techniques, which is an area where there is a growing amount of interest worldwide and a rapidly expanding body of information.
The program offers a unique small group learning opportunity for six varied beef cattle and sheep producers on King Island to work with Tasmanian farm ecologist and mentor Robin Tait to build their skills and confidence.
The program will run from September 2025 until April 2028 and has been tailored to accommodate the unique context of each individual farmer. It will give the participants time to develop their ideas, gain confidence to develop trials and then incorporate new practices into their farm systems.
This farmer-centred program is structured to enable participants to benefit from ongoing mentor support and guidance including: an annual farm visit and regular phone consultations as well as field walks and group learning sessions.
The participants are encouraged to explore different biological farming practices and observing any variations in farm resilience gains. This will contribute to relevant local case studies that can be shared with others. Sharing their farming experiences over the life of this program will also help to build and expand a network of farmers with common interests and foster greater collaboration.
