King Island Cat Management Brochure

The King Island Cat Management brochure explains the new Cat Management Areas declared by King Island Council and what they mean for local cat owners and the wider community.

The initiative aims to reduce the impact of roaming and feral cats on King Island’s unique native wildlife, particularly the critically endangered King Island Brown Thornbill and King Island Scrubtit, two bird species found nowhere else in the world.

The brochure helps residents understand where the Cat Management Areas apply, why they have been introduced and how they can do their part to protect local wildlife. It also outlines responsible cat ownership, including keeping cats secure, providing identification and using cat enclosures, known as catios.

The project is a partnership between King Island Council, Cradle Coast NRM, King Island Landcare and the local community. Alongside the brochure, the initiative includes subsidised cat desexing and microchipping through local veterinary clinics, as well as a catio workshop to help owners create safe outdoor spaces for their pets.

Ultimately, the brochure is about helping the King Island community understand the new cat management requirements, support responsible pet ownership and protect the island’s unique wildlife for future generations.
