On 13 August 2026, King Island Council published a proposal to declare new cat management areas, with the aim of reducing pressure on the island’s two critically endangered bird species: the King Island Scrubtit and King Island Thornbill. The map below outlines the proposed areas, which extend 2 km from any recorded bird observation and are highlighted in orange.
