The Cradle Coast Authority (CCA) welcomes Swinburne University of Technology’s plans to fund a PhD scholarship which will support the Regional Futures Plan.
Based at Burnie with visits to Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus, the scholarship recipient will work with Swinburne’s Centre for Social Impact (CSI) and CCA to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in regional areas.
CCA led the development of the Regional Futures Plan in 2018 and is currently implementing the plan in tandem with industry and the region’s nine councils.
“I think it’s really great when stakeholders from outside Tasmania say ‘hey, they’re doing something really interesting down there’,” CCA CEO Daryl Connelly said.
“The Futures Plan is a really ambitious approach to regional economic development, and this position will both contribute to its success and share what we learn with the rest of the world.”
The Centre for Social Impact Swinburne, part of the national CSI Network, is a multi-disciplinary research centre that works across boundaries to enable transformational change in organisations and communities. The PhD project will explore how regional entrepreneurial ecosystems support regional development, contributing to cutting edge regional development theory and practice.
“Often there’s a gap between the academic literature and realities of business; having an academic embedded within our industry-led approach to economic development is a great way to overcome that,” Mr Connelly said.
Professor Robyn Eversole of the Centre for Social Impact agreed. “Regions all over the world are seeking ways to grow prosperity, and it’s great to be able to showcase some of the important regional development work that’s happening right here in North West Tasmania.
