Project overview
Since 2019, Cradle Coast Authority has managed the design and construction of four truck wash and effluent dumping facilities across the north-west region of Tasmania, including King Island.
These facilities will enable farmers and truck drivers to clean their vehicles and equipment, supporting:
- Biosecurity
- Road Safety
- Occupational Health & Safety
- Animal Welfare
- Visitor Economy
Why is this important?
Transporters are obligated to assist in controlling the spread of disease and weeds through livestock transport. Effluent containment, responsible effluent disposal and ensuring trucks are washed correctly are key to minimising the risk of infecting stock and bringing disease and weeds onto a property.
Facility locations
King Island (Grassy Harbour)
- Upgrades to existing truck wash facilities
- Construction of a new settling pond and waste disposal system

Stanley
- A state-of-the-art disposal station powered entirely by renewable energy
- Located on land leased by TasPorts

Smithton
- Facility to be built by TasWater at the re-opened Smithton sale yard site, near Greenham meat processing works
- Jointly funded by state and federal governments, with additional support from the site owner
Burnie (Minna Road)
- Facility under construction on privately owned land managed by a group of stakeholders
